Apron Blog Giveaway

I'm sure the below apron piece has been making the rounds, but I really loved it and after reading it it evoked some wonderful memories of my mother wearing one of her mod 70's aprons. I didn't grow up with a grandma, so I don't have any grandma apron memories, but I do of my mother. I knew when my mother was wearing her wild mod apron that it meant A.) my parents were having a party and B.) my mother was making her delicious French bread with sesame seeds sprinkled on top.

The closest apron I could find to what my mother use to wear, was one I found that Rebecca Harkin made on her blog.

The History of 'APRONS'
I don't think kids
Know what an apron is now days.

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few,it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing Hot pans from the oven.

childapron
It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears..
From the chicken coop,The apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather
Was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.
Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden,It carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men-folks knew it was time to come In from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time Before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes. Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.
Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill
To thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

I never caught
Anything from an apron

I do wear an art apron, I actually have several aprons I keep hanging in different parts of the house because I'm such a messy artist! They double as kitchen aprons as well. Here's one that was gifted to me by my Diva buddy Kari, it's hanging from my very cool crown hook that my buddy Jean gave to me.

  2. Congratulations on your Blogoversary! My first apron was one that I sewed when I was in Four H. I got to model it at the California State Fair. I'm sorry that I don't have a photo, but my Mother has it packed away somewhere.

  3. Hi Aileen. Congratulations on your upcoming anniversary!

My favorite memory is just the way my grandmother always wore an apron over her dress around the house and would ring her hands on it. (Never saw her in slacks) It was definitely a working apron. She also had a sun bonnet (think little house on the prarrie).

Thanks for hosting this giveaway and giving me the chance to think of Grandma again.

    Hugs...Tracy :)

  4. JHawk,

I don't have a blog, but my favorite memory is of my Great Aunt Lula, she was never without her apron. She wore it everyday ALL day. When she passed away I got the apron!!!! It is safe and sound away from my sisters, they all wanted it. It has been with me for over 20 years. I took it with me when I spent 1 1/2 years in Australia. I came by via The Latest Trends in Mixed Media Arts group. thanks for allowing me to relive some fond memories.

  5. Congrats on your Anniversary Aileen.
I do wear aprons! Not only an art apron, but have several for the kitchen.I can be messy, and have a tendency to wipe my hands on it. So if I'm not wearing it, jeans & shirts are toast! My SIL gifted me a lovely bold patterend heavy apron. My husband calls it the "magic apron". Because when I wear it, he knows goodness is being made in the Kitchen...

  18. What memories. My paternal grandmother wore aprons and sunbonnets too. She sewed her own. She was so talented - a great cook, quilter, needleworker, and loved to read even though she only went to about the third grade in school. I miss her everyday!
